Case Study: Etta — What Separates a Well Trained Dog From an Untrained One
Etta was a happy, laid-back Golden Retriever — until her puppy energy took charge. By the time she reached nine months, her family was worn out by her habits: pulling on the leash, mouthing hands and arms, greeting guests with frantic excitement and jumping on them, dashing off the moment something outside caught her attention, needing to be lifted in and out of the car as she grew, and having no clue how to simply relax. They felt stuck. She was a sweet dog, just difficult to handle at times.
Her family also had concerns about Etta around their young grandchildren. She would never harm them on purpose, but she was so excitable and unaware of her own size — and she was still growing.
In just a few weeks, Etta went from a whirlwind of chaos to a calm, respectful member of the household. She greeted every guest politely, even the energetic grandchildren. Her family could walk her through town without leash pulling and enjoy a relaxed meal on a restaurant patio. They could watch television or read without her mouthing and biting their arms and hands — and no longer had to wipe her slobber off themselves. What a relief! We also helped her learn to stay relaxed in the car and to hop in and out on cue. Best of all, she not only had a reliable recall — coming back the moment they said “come” — but they rarely needed it, because she stopped running off in the first place. We are so proud of Etta and her family! Well done!
